ITV News research reveals shocking scale of SEND crisis across country
A survey for ITV News Regions and Nations, carried out by Opinium, found 64% of parents in London whose children have special educational needs had to take them out of school because their needs could not be met. Of those, 38% said their child had missed school for between a month and a year.
We were pleased to be asked to contribute to a news item and are very proud of one of our families who bravely told their story. You can watch the ITV London News piece here. Thanks also to our Chair of Trustees, Jennifer Peters, for her insights on the crisis in SEND education.
"Being at home and sitting at home they're the lost children, not something you get over when you turn 18 getting into employment," said Jennifer Peters, our Chair at Skylarks charity.
Jennifer Peters added: "A lot of our young people absolutely can be in a mainstream environment but they need that scaffolding and that requires money and the right people with the right backgrounds to meet that need."
Our amazing Patron, Sally Phillips, also shared her story which is available to watch on youtube here.
At Skylarks, we’re dedicated to helping children with additional needs reach their full potential. We understand how vital it is for parents and carers to have the right support and a caring community. We’re here to make sure children get the support they deserve and to empower parents on their journey.
